At South Lake OB/GYN and Advanced Surgery, we are committed to providing individualized and compassionate care to women in Orlando. Here are some of the vaginal health tips many Orlando OB/GYN give their patients.
1. Cleaning the Vagina
Your vagina is the internal tract that allows penetration during sex as well as vaginal childbirth. Don’t attempt to clean the vagina using special soaps and lotions. Most of these products not only lead to irritation and infection but also alter the pH of your vagina. The vagina usually cleans itself with discharge and if you have to clean it, use mild soap and water.
2. Keep an Eye On Your Discharge
The vagina uses the discharge, cervical mucus, to lubricate and cleanse itself. That said, you need to keep an eye on your vaginal discharge. Inconsistencies, unusual colors or change of smell of your discharge can signal a problem such as a sign of a yeast infection, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis or sexually transmitted infection. No matter what you think the problem may be, any inconsistencies, unusual colors or change of smell is a sign to see an Orlando OB/GYN.
3. Strong Smell
It is normal for a vagina to produce a strange smell due to a lack of hygiene practices, the vagina’s bacterial flora or vaginal discharge. However, if the scent is strong, it may be a sign of a medical condition like bacterial vaginosis. If the smell is making you uncomfortable, you need to see your Orlando OB/GYN to figure out what might be wrong.
4. Be Aware of Itching and Burning
Most women assume that it’s a yeast infection when they experience vaginal itching and burning. In most cases, vaginal itching and burning can be a sign of yeast infection, but could be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection or bacterial vaginosis as well. We therefore advise women to see their doctor for an evaluation.
5. Underwear is Optional
You don’t have to wear underwear to keep your vagina healthy. Of course, underwear can trap vaginal discharge or reduce sweat around the vulva, but it can also cause a yeast infection during summer. If you must wear underwear, choose one that is made from cotton, not silk.
