You’ve looked across the restaurant at a woman sitting at another table and thought, “Why do her eyebrows look so perfect?” Maybe she was born with it, but we’re guessing she might have had a little help along the way. Maybe she’s had microblading at South Lake OB/GYN in Clermont, FL!
While our medspa is known for its laser hair removal, photofacials, and microdermabrasion, we’re equally as excited about this latest advancement in semi-permanent makeup. You’ve probably heard it discussed among friends or you’ve read about it on the internet. You may even know someone who’s had this treatment performed. One of the questions we get asked most often is, “How long does it last?” We’re here to answer that question for you, and a few others that may make it easier for you to make a decision regarding this semi-permanent option.
Are you tired of drawing on your eyebrows every morning? Is your morning routine consumed with plucking, shaping, and filling them in? We get it. We like our makeup routine to be quick and painless so we can get on to coffee, the office, and crossing things off the to-do list. It’s not enough to simply skip your eyebrows.
You’ve heard it before: “Eyebrows frame the face.” And it’s true! The best brows help to balance your facial features and accentuate your natural assets. In fact, when brows are done right, you can often get away with letting the usual makeup routine fall by the wayside.
What Is It?
Microblading is similar to the technique of tattooing, in which small needles or blades are used to deposit semi-permanent pigment into the basal layer of the epidermis. Unlike tattooing, which is usually performed in blocks of color, this treatment is applied in feather-like strokes designed to resemble natural hairs.
Does the idea of a “tattoo” concern you? Don’t worry! This treatment resembles a tattooing type of action but is really not all that similar. The days of harsh eyebrow tattoos are long gone! In this treatment, “ink” does not go as deeply into the skin and is performed by a clinician specifically trained in semi-permanent makeup. Believe us when we say that no one will think you have eyebrow tattoos once you’ve gone through the treatment process with our trained experts.
The History Behind It
This treatment dates back more than two decades to its origins in Asia and has only recently become more popular in the United States, where it has become one of the most coveted cosmetic opportunities available. Some of the earliest clients to have this treatment in Western civilization were cancer patients who had undergone chemotherapy and lost their eyebrow hair.
The term for this treatment has often been used interchangeably with other terms, like “eyebrow embroidery” or “microstroking,” and is believed to have been coined by micro-pigmentation expert Dr. Linda Dixon. Dixon is often credited with being a pioneer in the field of permanent makeup. She was one of the first to ever ask for permanent eyeliner for herself — a treatment that the clinic, at the time, had never heard of!
The rest, as they say, was history.
According to the 2019 “Medical Spa State of the Industry Report” assembled by the American Medical Spa Association, this treatment is surging in popularity among medical spas. Roughly one-third of the clinics polled now offer it as a service to their clients, an increase from the same survey two years prior. Nearly 10% more are considering adding the semi-permanent option to their menu of services.
In 2017, the website RealSelf.com reported nearly one million searches of the treatment on its site. We suspect that number is only continuing to grow as more clinics opt to offer this service to their customers. Even some A-list celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Mila Kunis, Lorde, Adele, and Mandy Moore have embraced this treatment and helped fuel its popularity.
Who Is It for?
Today, this treatment is being embraced by all types of clients regardless of skin type, ethnicity, or age.
Microblading is particularly ideal for individuals with sparse brow hair for one reason or another. It’s also popular among those with vision issues that complicate makeup application or for people who have allergies to common facial and makeup products. You may not fit into any of these categories — and that’s fine! You may simply want to speed up your morning routine or feel more beautiful or put-together in any scenario, from the beach to the gym to a black-tie event.
The simplest way to know if this treatment is right for you is to ask yourself, “Do I want natural, well-defined brows that last?” If your response is “yes,” then this option may just be the right fit for you!
How Do I Prepare?
There’s not much you need to do to be ready to have your semi-permanent makeup treatment performed. Here are a few general guidelines we recommend:
- Do not drink caffeinated beverages or alcohol the day of your appointment
- Avoid sunbathing or tanning a few days before your appointment
- Do not pluck, wax or tint your brows in the days before your treatment
- Refrain from facial treatments such as chemical peels or Botox
- Avoid consuming blood thinners like aspirin or ibuprofen
We also usually recommend that you wash and style your hair as you normally do the morning of your appointment. It may be a few days before you can safely wash your hair since you’ll want to avoid water coming into contact with your new brows.
What Should I Expect at My Appointment?
The treatment itself usually takes a couple of hours from start to finish. Your practitioner will begin by discussing your desired outcome and marking out your new eyebrows. A topical numbing solution will be applied. Then, just lie back and let us work! Unlike some cosmetic procedures which can take weeks or months to observe results, your new brows will be visible to you as soon as the appointment is finished.
Being able to observe your new look right away is one of the greatest results of this treatment. Upon completion, they may be a bit darker than you were anticipating, but for most people, the results will lighten over the next two weeks. The result is just glorious, natural-looking brows that are designed to look like you’ve always had them.
The ABCs of Post-Care
The aftercare for your new brows is not complicated, but it is essential for achieving the best possible outcome. You’ve made an investment in your aesthetic and we want you to have long-lasting results.
We’ll discuss the details of your aftercare plan in specifics at your appointment, but generally, we follow these guidelines:
- Avoid getting your new brows wet for up to 10 days afterward
- Lightly “wash” your brows twice a day with a water-soaked cotton swab
- Apply aftercare ointment in the frequency your technician advises
- Do not apply makeup to the area for up to 10 days after the treatment
- Resist the urge to scratch any brow areas that itch during the recovery period
- Do not pick at any scabbing that may develop during the recovery phase
- Avoid activities where you might sweat excessively, such as intense exercise or sunbathing
After your initial treatment appointment, you’ll have a few weeks to enjoy your new brows before we’ll ask you to return for a follow-up touch-up appointment. The touch-up appointment will take place roughly six to eight weeks after your first visit and is designed to allow the practitioner to fill in any areas that may need additional attention.
Because it can take several weeks for your newly-bladed eyebrows to heal completely and for the pigment to settle into your skin, we recommend the second appointment for one of several reasons:
- To give attention to areas where the pigment was not retained properly
- To refine and redefine the brows’ shape
- To adjust the color after your body absorbs some during the healing process
How Long Will It Last?
This treatment, as we’ve already discussed, is a semi-permanent cosmetic process, “semi-permanent” being the operative word! That means it will require some maintenance and upkeep on your part if you want to keep it looking as new and fresh as the first day you had it done. It certainly won’t be anything like keeping up with your natural brows, though!
The maintenance plan will vary for each client and is usually impacted by your age, skin type, and lifestyle. For example, if your skin is on the oily side, you may experience faster fading than someone with normal to dry skin. Fading is more likely to occur with this treatment than traditional tattooing since the ink is not implanted as far beneath the skin. Your skincare routine and how much time you spend in the sun can also impact the type of fading your experience.
Typically, we’ll want you to schedule a touch-up one year to 18 months after your initial appointment. With proper care, such as using sunscreen when outdoors and avoiding applying products such as Retin-A to the area, you can prolong the life of your results. Eventually, the treatment process will need to be re-initiated in its entirety to keep your brows looking fresh.
What About Makeup?
Maybe the best news about the period following this treatment is the complete lack of need for makeup on your brows. In fact, we discourage it. Your brows now have a full, healthy, natural look — no penciling, stenciling, or powdering required! Of course, you can still wear other eye makeup and may even choose to use makeup on your brows, but let’s talk about the best options to accentuate and protect your new semi-permanent look at your consultation.
